Poetry & Perspective: Making Poetry Fun, Gentle, and Confidence-Boosting

Poetry & Perspective: Making Poetry Fun, Gentle, and Confidence-Boosting

Poetry does not have to mean staring at a blank page, worrying about rhyme, or remembering what a metaphor is.
With the right approach, poetry becomes a safe space to explore ideas, find your voice, and even have a little fun along the way.

That is why I created the Wonder and Scribble Poetry and Perspective Pack: Exploring Identity and Belonging which contains eight gentle, creative sessions designed for curious learners aged 10+, whether they are home educated, in school, or somewhere in between.

Why This Pack Exists

Not all minds learn in neat, straight lines. Some zigzag. Some leap ahead and loop back. Some get distracted by a pigeon mid sentence (true story).

I wanted to create a poetry resource that:

  • Feels calm and accessible, not overwhelming

  • Builds confidence in a child's own voice

  • Gently introduces poetic techniques without pressure

  • Celebrates personal identity and belonging

The theme is inspired by The Orange by Wendy Cope, a much loved poem about finding joy in small, everyday moments. It is a reminder that creativity can grow from the simplest details of our lives.

What Is Inside the Pack

8 creative, flexible sessions, including:

  • What is a poem? exploring different styles and breaking down the myth that poems have to rhyme

  • Reading and responding to poems like The Tyger by William Blake, Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, and To This Day by Shane Koyczan

  • Featured poem study: The Orange discovering themes, poetic devices, and personal interpretations

  • Learning and practising simile, metaphor, alliteration, personification, rhyme, and more in ways that are fun and hands on

  • Writing your own Joyful Poems and Grey Day Poems

  • Creative Calm Tasks, such as Poetry in Motion and turning favourite lines into art

  • Optional crafts: chocolate orange cupcakes, orange scented soap, and a joyful moments jar

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Pack

Whether you have just downloaded your copy or you are thinking about it, here are some ideas to help you get the best experience:

  1. Go at your own pace. There is no need to rush. Some families complete a session in a single sitting, others spread it over a week.
  2. Make it multisensory. Read poems aloud, act them out, or set them to music. This helps learners connect more deeply.
  3. Mix and match activities. If a writing task feels heavy one day, try a craft activity instead.
  4. Use the Parent Support Pages. These are there to help you notice progress that is not just about finished work. Confidence, curiosity, and effort all count.
  5. Celebrate the little wins. Share a line your learner is proud of on the fridge, in a group chat, or in our competition.
  6. Encourage personalisation. Let them decorate, colour, and make the resource theirs. It is a safe space to play with words and ideas.

Why It Works for All Learners

  • Chunked, bite sized steps. Perfect for focus in bursts

  • Multiple learning styles. Read, write, move, draw, discuss

  • Space for doodles, colouring, and scribbles to make the pages feel personal

  • Encourages experimentation without fear of getting it wrong

  • Includes Parent Support Pages to help track progress, confidence, and creativity

More Than Just Worksheets

This is not about ticking boxes.
It is about giving young writers the tools and freedom to:

  • Notice the details in their own lives

  • Express feelings in words, images, and movement

  • Build a relationship with poetry that is personal, not prescriptive

And for an extra spark of motivation, learners can enter our Poetry Competition with prizes up to a £20 voucher which is open to pack users aged 9 to 18.
